The strength of Happy Bhag Jayegi is the characters: Diana Penty

- Team RadioCity

It's been four years since Diana Penty was last seen in 'Cocktail'. 'Abhay Deol's last release was 'One By Two' in 2014 and Ali Fazal was last spotted in the forgettable 'Khamoshiyaan'. Their brand new film, 'Happy Bhag Jayegi', is directed by Mudassar Aziz and produced by Aanand L Rai, whose rushes have captivated the interest of the audience. As the film nears its release, Team Radio City catches up with the three actors for a quick chat. Read on to know what's going on behind the minds of our talented trio. Diana, your new release is being touted as your comeback? Where have you been for the last four years?Diana: I was under a rock, I suppose. smilesSo why is Happy leaving her men heartbroken and running away?Diana: She is running because she wants to go to Pakistan. smiles No, but she is running away from her wedding and she finds herself in Pakistan. The comedy of errors that follow is what makes the film interesting. Abhay, why aren't you as active on social media as people would want you to be? Because you have a great sense of humour, we believe.Abhay: I am active on Facebook but not on Twitter. Initially, like everyone else, I had a team handling my social media but what they would communicate on my behalf never really represented me. So, I decided to limit myself only on Facebook.Ali, do you feel that Abhay should be more accessible on social media?Ali: Of course, I do. Because throughout the filming of this movie, I got to learn a lot from him and I feel that he is extremely wise, which is why I feel that people should get to see this side of him.Diana, do you feel that social media presence is important? How have you come to terms with it?Diana: I've come to realise that it is very important. I used to be like Abhay, a few years ago. I would think that social media is a major intrusion to one's privacy and space. Everyone is getting to access details about you. But I do realise, that when you are not out there enough as an actor, it is important to keep up with the audience to know how are they reacting and thinking about you. So, now I'm cool with it. What would you like to advise Abhay then, who we think is still shying away from it?Diana: All I would suggest is that at least use it for movie promotions. Because everyone else is posting updates, but this man is not bothered. laughsAbhay: See, it's a waste of 140 characters. You have to limit yourself and you end up committing too many grammatical crimes.Diana, apart from being funny, the movie has also created a very fearless woman character. What inspired you to take up this movie?Diana: I read the script and found it quite unique. This is not something that I've read before. Also, what I liked the most about the film is that the character Happy is poles apart from Meera which I essayed in 'Cocktail', so I believed that this should be my comeback. Abhay, what interested you about this movie?Abhay: Mudassar Aziz, our director convinced me that I was perfect for the role he had written for me. Aanand L Rai was producing the film. I've worked with him as an actor as he directed me on 'Raanjhanaa'. So I was very impressed by the script offered to me. It was very similar to my role in 'Socha Na tha'. So I thought, why not take it up and make my comeback as well, alongwith Diana. laughsBut do you also agree that our films should create much stronger roles for women?Abhay: Of course, we should. When we conceived 'Dev D', we wanted that our women are not just helplessly in love with Dev. Dev was the most chauvinistic character ever. His only redemption was to die or turn into a new leaf. So, we wanted that our women were strong, central players whom Dev could look upto. That is what I like about Happy, is that she is fearless and it is what attracts my character towards her. Even Momal Sheikh who plays my fiance in the movie has been given a very strong part in the film.Diana: Actually, the strength of this film is the characters. Each character has been well written and well defined. Ali: it's a wide canvas for all of us. I've never played a Punjabi before nor am I even familiar about the culture and the ethnicity. This is why I'm happy that Mudassar chose me for the role. On the contrary, Aanand Sir did not want me on the film, because they wanted a very regular guy who can get lost in the crowd. So, tell us about your role in the film.Ali: He is quite educated. Educated enough to say 'I Love You' laughs. A regular Punjabi guy, his life revolves around love and the people who, he loves. So what do we see you do next?Ali: Well, currently I'm prepping up for 'Fukrey 2'.What has changed for you now that you've also ventured into International films?Ali: I think my cameo has opened up a few doors for me. But my heart and my love will remain here. Hindi cinema is my first love.Abhay, do you have any new releases lined up for you?Abhay: Right now, I'm only concerned with the release of 'Happy Bhag Jayegi'. Then I hope, the scripts come along.Ali: Times are changing. It is a great time for good scripts.Abhay: But yes, I am not comfortable with scripts that have random song and dance sequences that do not add continuity to the story. The problem is that the kind of scripts I like are films that are made through immense difficulties. Diana: I think most of our movies nowadays are having the songs playing in the background like montages. Gone are the days when songs would randomly pop out in the middle of the story. What was the overall experience like while shooting for the film?Diana: It was fun because it was a very small unit. The atmosphere was very enthusiastic and infectious. So filming the movie was pretty positive.Lastly, your message for our readers?Ali: Come and watch our film. As put by our director, it's a fun, cross-border run-com. Also, please show some love for our friend from Pakistan, Momal Shaikh who's making her debut with the film. We've tried our best to make an entertaining film and hope you will like it.Diana: I'm excited and nervous because it's a comeback and we've invested a lot more than just enacting our given characters.
