On June 16, Om Raut's Adipurush saw a nationwide theatrical release. Based on the Hindu mythology tale Ramayana, the movie is a modern-day telling of the epic tale of Lord Ram and Mata Sita. The movie is headlined by Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Devdutta Nage.

Even before the movie was released, it invited controversy, this time all the way from Nepal. In Adipurush, Mata Sita is called the 'Daughter of India.'

However, as per the Ramayana, Mata Sita was born in Nepal's Janakpur, and Lord Ram came to marry her. The dialogue 'Janaki is the daughter of India' has enraged Nepal and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah.

Why is Nepal backlashing against Adipurush?

On Thursday, Nepal's mayor announced they wouldn't let any Indian film be showcased within the country if the makers of the South Indian film did not correct the 'mistake.' Taking it to Facebook, Shah shared the decision in Nepali.

He wrote, "Until and unless the slogan 'Janki is a daughter of India' contained in the South Indian film Adipurush is not true not only in Nepal but also in India, no Hindi film will be allowed to run in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Three days have been given to correct this. Hail to Mother Sita!"

Later, reporter Rahul Raut tweeted, 'The Adipurush controversy is gaining momentum in Nepal. The morning shows have been canceled in the Kathmandu Valley due to security concerns. KTM Mayor Shah Balen and thousands of Nepali Janata are demanding that the particular dialogue that claims Janaki is India's daughter be removed from the movie everywhere. Although the meeting with exhibitors is currently underway, it's still unclear when the film will start screening in cinemas.'

However, as per the latest updates, the Nepal censor board has passed the film after the makers of Adipurush eliminated the controversial dialogue about calling Sita the daughter of India. It seems the makers have made many such blunders that could invite further backlash.
