Anushka Sharma: Shattering The Glass Ceiling Of A Stereotypical Indian Actress

Gone are the days when actresses used to play damsel in distress, waiting for their prince charming to come to their rescue. Today's independent and feisty actresses are portraying roles that are real, authentic, and far away from being a sobbing, helpless woman. If there's one actress who will definitely make it to the "bold and beautiful" list, it is Anushka Sharma.
The actress celebrated her 34th birthday yesterday with husband Virat Kohli, friends, and family. Amidst the bubble celebration due to the ongoing T20 tournament, the power couple took it to Instagram to show some cliche but cute romance, while the actress hogged on a piece of her birthday cake. Her Instagram and movies are a reminder of how she is shattering the glass celing of a stereotypical Indian actress.
For decades together, the Indian film industry portrayed women unimportant or just as an accessory to the movie. When she started her career with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, despite it being a typical romantic movie with SRK, she stood out with her acting skills. After a couple of hits and flops, Band Baaja Baarat proved to be a game-changer for her. The movie even won her several best actress awards.
That was the beginning of an era of powerful and strong women. Being an army officer's daughter, being disciplined was like breathing to her. Her passion for the craft only grew stronger and better after her first few movies.
After playing a wedding planner in the movie, the actress played Mira in NH10. The movie marked her first ever production project. Smashing the hell out of the villians in the movie who killed her husband, she wore the badass character flawlessly. Since then, there's no looking back. Be it Jab Tak Hain Jaan, Pari, or even Sui Dhaaga, Sharma moved past the phase of playing the side-kick.
And then came another side of her - Anushka Sharma the producer. When she started Clean Slate Filmz with her brother, there were some phenonenal stories that were encouraged by the production house.
When Anushka and former Indian captain Virat Kohli tied a knot, they took the nation by the storm. We think it's a pattern they like to follow because that's what happened when the couple announced their pregnancy. Even after Vamika, she has been unstoppable. She's working on her upcoming movie Chakda Express, a biography on Jhulan Goswami, Indian Women Cricket Team's fast bowler.
It isn't a shocker to know a woman working after she has delivered a baby. But the society is sure to act shocked with a lot of pre-concieved notions. People blamed her for Kohli's poor performance on field, they hooked her up with her co-stars, and even fueled rumours about her unfiendly behaviour with her peers. Anushka being Anushka, she worked her way through all the obstacles to become one of the leading Bollywood actresses we have today.
Radio City wishes her a very happy birthday!
