Diljit Dosanjh has captivated fans with a sneak peek of his upcoming film, Punjab 95. On January 11, the actor-singer unveiled his first look from the biographical drama. The poster portrays Diljit in a raw and rugged avatarmdashsitting on the floor, bloodied and bruised, dressed in a simple kurta and turban. He captioned the post with, 'I Challenge the Darkness,' leaving fans intrigued. The film is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and is set to release in February 2025.

Jaswant Singh Khalra: A Story of Bravery and Tragedy

Punjab 95 delves into the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who exposed mass human rights violations in Punjab during the 1990s. Khalra's investigations unearthed the cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies by law enforcement. Tragically, he was kidnapped in September 1995 and later murdered. Ten years after his disappearance, six Punjab police officers were convicted for his murder.

Punjab 95 and Struggle With CBFC

The film faced delays owing to challenges with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Last year, the CBFC recommended between 85 and 120 cuts, including the removal of Khalra's name and reconsideration of the title Punjab 95, which references the year of Khalra's disappearance. Khalra's wife, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, strongly opposed these demands, stating, 'The biopic was made with the family's consent and should be released without any cuts.'

Amid these obstacles, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee arranged for historians to review the film's accuracy. They concluded that the movie truthfully portrays Punjab's history without targeting anyone.
