The story starts by showing Kashi, the last city standing on the planet, which is ruled by the god-king Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan). The story spans a millennia, beginning with the events of the Mahabharata in 3102 BC, marking the start of Kali Yuga, and culminating in 2898 AD.

At its core, Kalki 2898 AD focuses on the arrival of Kalki, the enigmatic tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu, who steps on Earth to destroy everything evil.
