Meghna Gulzar celebrates her 49th birthday today. She has had a great career in films as a director and has rediscovered herself as an artist ever since Talvar released it in 2015. With Talvar, she expanded her vision and found a unique voice, which continues to enthrall audiences today. After 2015, there was no going back as she made back-to-back hits like Raazi, Chhapaak, and the recently released Sam Bahadur.

Meghna Gulzar is the daughter of the legendary poet-lyricist Gulzar. He himself was a filmmaker before turning into a lyricist in the early 2000s. On multiple occasions, she has revealed how lucky she is that her father is Gulzar and how she takes advantage of the fact.

In an interview, she revealed, "I exploit being his daughter when he is writing my songs and 'haq se'. If I don't like a line, I tell him, 'Abhi dusri line likh ke dijiye, abhi chahiye gaana, abhi poora karna hai'. Utna toh haq hai, utna toh lungi."

Gulzar has written songs for her films before, like the famous Dilbaro in Raazi and Ae Watan from the same film. Even in the recently released Sam Bahadur, Gulzar was the lyrics writer.

Speaking about him in the interview, she said, "The number of things he absorbs, the amount he reads, the amount of awareness he inculcates within himself of the time that he lives in... You are not relevant by accident you are relevant by action and intent."

Further, she added, "My father says, 'Yeh karne ki vidya hai, yeh karne se aati hai'. You cannot take yourself seriously and say, 'For one month I'll not write, and then on the 31st day when I start writing, it will all come back'. This is something that he has instilled in me because he has also followed this all his life."

It is his discipline that has gotten him this far, and Meghna imbibes value from him.

Meghna is the daughter of former actresses Rakhee and Gulzar. Her first film release as a director was Filhaal in 2002. She later directed films like Just Married (2007) and Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) before she rose to fame with the critically acclaimed Talvar. It is worth to revisit these films on her birthday today.

Her next film is reported to be with Sidharth Malhotra, with shooting beginning in mid-2024. This will be her fifth film that is based on a true story.
