OCTOBER 04,2023
Famously termed the royal princess for being part of the family of Nawabs with a rich tradition, Soha Ali Khan turns 45 today on her birthday. She is the youngest daughter of legendary actress Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who was the 9th Nawab of Pataudi. Getting her beautiful looks from her mother, Sharmila Tagore, who set the silver screen on fire with her fairy-like appeal on screen, Soha Ali Khan has a distinct quality to her acting. Apart from that, she wrote a book titled Perils of Being Moderately Famous that won her the Crossword Book Award in 2018. She is married to actor Kunal Khemu, and they are parents to daughter Inaya Naumi Khemu, who was born in 2017.

Ever since her debut in 2004 with Dil Mange More, she has been part of some important films like Rang De Basanti and acted in romantic dramas like Tum Mile. But one film where her performance is just top-notch and is not remembered as much is the Sudhir Mishra film Khoya Khoya Chand (2007). The film is a tribute to the golden age of Bollywood in the 50s and 60s, showing the rise of the storytelling medium.
In the film, Soha Ali Khan plays Nikhat, an upcoming actress who wants to make it big in the industry. She brings a new freshness to the character, and it is a pleasure to see her in some scenes where she is learning how to dance but fails multiple times. Her face has a certain kind of vulnerability and innocence, which is perfectly matched with the character she plays. The film also starred Shiney Ahuja and Rajat Kapoor as struggling directors and producers, respectively. Situated in the filmmaking style of Sudhir Mishra, Soha looks stunning throughout and aces in all scenes. Looking at her, one gets the feeling of an uncanny resemblance to her mother, Sharmila Tagore, which can also be one of the reasons she is cast in the film, as she carries that old-school look.
When it was released, the film was not well received by everyone. However, it needs to be seen for its recreation of the era of stardom in Bollywood and its soulful music, which blends well with Mishra's off-beat filmic techniques. On top of that, the film is a must-watch for all the acting performances by Shiney Ahuja, Saurabh Shukla, and Rajat Kapoor, all of whom shine in their parts. Soha Ali Khan remains the major discovery in the film, showing complexities with her anxious face and managing to pull your attention whenever she is on screen. On her birthday, it is worth checking out the film to reminisce about what the actor can do if given the perfect role that suits her own sensibilities.
