The buzz surrounding Tumbbad has returned with its re-release in theatres, sparking excitement among fans. Now, actor Sohum Shah has officially announced that a sequel to the film, Tumbbad 2, is in the works. With Tumbbad being a unique folk horror movie, the news of a second installment has generated high anticipation.

Sohum Shah Talks About the Distinct Nature of Tumbbad

In a recent interview, Sohum Shah explained how Tumbbad differs from other recent folk horror films such as Stree and Munjya. He emphasised that although these films may share similar themes, Tumbbad stands out because of its storytelling.

Shah stated, 'I don't think that is a problem. Those films are different. None of them are like Tumbbad. There's a lot of difference in these stories. They are not making dadi-nani ki kahaniyaan (tales shared by our grandmothers). Our story is not based in modern times. Our film begins and ends in the period time. We have a rakshas, a demon. They are not dealing with such elements.'

While other folk horror films might incorporate elements of fear and folklore, Tumbbad delves into traditional storytelling set in a historical era. The movie features a mythical demon and doesn't rely on modern-day references or urban settings, which gives it a distinct identity within the genre.

Sohum Shah's enthusiasm for Tumbbad 2 is clear. Reflecting on the success of the re-release, Shah said, 'The kind of love and support that you guys have given to Tumbbad, I think it will now be easy to make Tumbbad 2. We are still in the pre-production process and locking the script. Once that is done, we will look out for the right kind of backing.' The actor's motivation stems from the overwhelming response the film continues to receive, inspiring the team to push forward with the sequel.

The Success of Tumbbad

The original Tumbbad, released in 2018, quickly became a cult classic in the folk horror genre. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the movie follows a man's search for a hidden treasure in the early 20th-century Indian village of Tumbbad.

Upon its recent re-release, Tumbbad shattered its original box office records, earning nearly Rs 1.50 crore on its opening day, which is three times more than its original release earnings. The film's re-release outperformed several new Hindi movies, such as Madgaon Express (Rs 7.1 crore) and Kill (Rs 6.25 crore), during its opening weekend.

This ongoing success has given Shah and his team the confidence to embark on creating Tumbbad 2, with the hopes that it will continue to captivate audiences just as the original did.
