"Okkadu," the blockbuster directed by Gunasekhar and starring Mahesh Babu, stands as a testament to perseverance and creative vision in the face of challenges. Released as a Sankranthi gift in 2003, the film not only shattered box office records but also weathered severe criticism from conception to release.

The success story behind Okkadu

Before embarking on "Okkadu," Gunasekhar had experienced setbacks with his previous ventures, notably "Mrigaraju," which did not meet expectations. Determined to prove himself, he drew inspiration from a magazine interview with badminton player Pullela Gopichand, whose struggles and passion for sports deeply resonated with him. This became the cornerstone of the film's narrative.

Securing Mahesh Babu for the lead role was pivotal, especially given the uncertainties surrounding the project. Producer M.S. Raju, despite recent setbacks in his own career, took a leap of faith, supporting Gunasekhar's ambitious vision, including extensive filming near the iconic Charminar.

However, even after assembling a talented team including Bhumika Chawla as the female lead, composer Mani Sharma, writers Paruchuri brothers (Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao and Paruchuri Gopala Krishna), and cinematographer Shekhar V., challenges persisted. The original title, "He is her army," was unavailable, and alternatives like "Kabaddi" were deemed unsuitable. Eventually, "Okkadu" was chosen, a decision that would prove fortuitous.

As production progressed, scepticism from industry insiders and critics intensified. The shadow of past failures loomed large over both Gunasekhar and Mahesh Babu. Questions about the film's potential success and its impact on Mahesh's career were rife.

Yet, against all odds, "Okkadu" was released to resounding success. Made on a budget of Rs. 9 crores, it grossed Rs. 39 crores, setting new benchmarks in Telugu cinema. Critics and audiences alike lauded its gripping storyline, dynamic performances, and memorable music.

"Okkadu" not only revitalised Gunasekhar's career but also cemented Mahesh Babu's stature as a superstar. It exemplifies how determination, creative risk-taking, and a compelling narrative can overcome even the staunchest adversity in the world of cinema. For Gunasekhar, "Okkadu" marked a triumphant return to form, solidifying his reputation as a visionary director unafraid to tackle unconventional narratives. Mahesh Babu, meanwhile, emerged as a bankable superstar with a penchant for choosing roles that resonate with the masses.

The journey of "Okkadu" remains a timeless reminder that amidst adversity, true greatness can emerge, forever etching its name in the annals of Indian cinema.
