One of the most-awaited movies, The Sabarmati Report, starring Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra, is slated to release on November 15. The lead actor is busy promoting his upcoming film, and amid the same, Massey has sparked controversy with a comment on India's independence.

Vikrant seems to be facing a sudden backlash lately. Just days after he received criticism for touching his wife's feet on Karwa Chauth, the actor has further sparked a controversy with a politically sensitive comment.

In a recent interview to promote his film The Sabarmati Report, Vikrant Massey made remarks on freedom of speech and expressions in India, referring to the 1947 independence from British rule as "so-called azaadi."

What was Vikrant Massey's controversial statement?

The 12th Fail actor recently appeared on the Top Angle podcast with journalist Sushant B. Sinha. On the podcast, he discussed the modern history of India and questioned whether the country is really independent.

Massey said, 'We need to understand that we are a young nation. It's been 76-77 years (since independence). After hundreds and hundreds of years of oppressionmdashfrom the Mughals, the Dutch, the French, and the Britishmdashwe got one so-called Azadi (independence). But was it really independence?"

"The colonial hangover that they left, we stayed in it. I feel that the Hindus have finally got that opportunity to ask for their identity in their own country. We sometimes don't pay attention to this concept of identity, the concept of sentiment. The biggest wars have been fought on sentiment most of the decisions in our lives are driven by sentiment and how we feel," he further added.

Netizens slam Vikrant Massey for his comment

As soon as the podcast went up, Vikrant's 'so-called azaadi' did not go well with the netizens. While some slammed him for millions of freedom fighters' sacrifice, others called him a traitor.

After the snippet of the interview was shared on social media, one user wrote in Hindi, "What has happened to him? Is he saying all this to promote the film? One should keep an eye on him even after release."

Another comment read, "Laakhon logon ke balidaan ke baad mili Azaadi inko so-called lag rahi hai. Inke jaise gaddaar sirf Bharat me hi paaye jaate hain. (The independence we won after millions of people's sacrifice seems so-called to him. Traitors like this are only found in India.")

Some even sarcastically called him "Naye itihaaskaar (New historian)" while others labelled him "Male Kangana Ranaut."
