With OTT platforms coming up with engaging content, one of them is Yami Gautam Dhar starrer A Thursday. A Disney+ Hotstar release, A Thursday holds a slick grip. Having said that, after a point, the movie feels unnecessary stretched because the writers have gone a little too far to make a point.

No, we don't intend to give you any spoilers but by end of this review, you will be able to decide if A Thursday is worth your time or not.

The premise of A Thursday is unconventionally compelling. Not to miss, it is on the similar lines of A Wednesday (though the latter was produced by UTV, the latest release is an RSVP production). A Thursday has a fresh new protagonist whose thrive for justice takes unsavoury and unexpected turns. Yami Gautam Dhar plays the lead character named Naina Jaiswal, who runs a playschool in South Bombay called Lil' Tots. Like you must have guessed by now, she is the most loved teacher by all the toddlers and their parents.

Soon, the gleam in her personality and movie fades away, after she becomes the architect of a hostage situation, keeping the toddlers confined in her playschool. She's able to pull off this stunt since the playschool is attached to her lawyer-fiance's fancy SoBo home.

Without any delay, the lead cops arrive to tackle the situation. First, the heavily pregnant Catherine Alvarez (Neha Dhupia) takes the matter into her hands till Naina lays her first demand - Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni). Catherine and Javed have a history of their own, which could spill over to complicate the already delicate situation. And this triad of the primary characters makes the plot straight-up intriguing. All that aside, the question still lingers around "why" of everything that Naina is doing. What is her ultimate objective?

She then clearly conveys the same to Khan - a ton of money and a direct line to the visiting Prime Minister Sahiba, Maya Rajguru (Dimple Kapadia). It is after the Prime Minister's involvement that the story starts to unravel, in more ways than one. The slickness of the script becomes even better through an intricate web of events. However, keeping some glances of A Wednesday away is a difficult task to do. Hereafter, there is no stopping Naina because the ball is always in her court in every situation. There are, however, a few hiccups but they're minor and could've been unavoidable.

While a Thursday strives to give out a sense of urgency, relevant, and trendy, but it only succeeds partially. There are scenes that are completely haywire, far away from the actual agenda. For instance, the scoop-sucking Arnab-like media channels constantly reporting the hostage situation live.

The 'why' of the film is gradually unfolded, which is a mix-bag of several small cues along the way - the pregnant cop being highly undermined by her male superior, or the Prime Minister trying to respond to a rather unwanted sexist comment amidst a hair-trigger situation, or revelations of Naina being dependent on anti-depressants, and more as such.

Co-writer and director Behzad Khambata subtly brings in a twist or two, the seeds for which were sown much earlier. Only if there was enough emphasis on adding more such twists, its impulse would have done the heavy lifting for the film. A Thursday tries to touch upon several issues that Naina faces whilst keeping the gratification of the story through her character.

All said and done, Yami Gautam Dhar has stepped out of her girl next door stereotype, thus giving yet another phenomenal performance. Alongside Atul Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia's roles being highly dependent on Yami's character, Neha Dhupia is once again under-utilized only because the writers or probably the director didn't know how to make the most of what she has to offer.
