How to perform at a music festival as an indie artist?

Team Radio City Freedom

With the music festival season well and truly under way, a lot of indie artists might be wondering how to play these gigs. It is not an easy endeavour and there is no fixed process to get a chance to play at a festival. But there are definite ways that an artist can follow which will increase his/her chance of getting on the lineup. "It is a mix of two, one, how relevant you are at the time? How much new music are you releasing? And the second is to have a really good live act. Even if your song is blowing up on streaming platform a festival will only book you if you already have a great live act going," says singer songwriter Raghav Meattle.

For an upcoming artist performing on the big stage and infront of a large crowd is nerve-wracking. While there are ways to become a better performer, indi pop icon Rabbi Shergill feels the jitters even now " When you are on stage you are 18 all over again. If you dont feel the rush you shouldnt be on the stage, probably you wouldnt be. The greatest marker of you being alive and topical are the butterflies in the stomach. You are supposed to feel nervous, you are supposed to feel vulnerable irrespective of how long you have performed for. "

On ways to interact and perform on a big stage Raghav says, "The confidence to perform on stage stems from writing great music and performing at every gig that comes your way. This is to ensure that when you are on the big stage you are not nervous and wondering how to talk to your audience. Once you play 100 gigs you get an idea of how your live set looks. That is when festivals start booking you."
