Indian captains who led team India in ODI World Cup

The first Indian captain to help his country win a World Cup was Kapil Dev. In 1983, under his leadership, India's squad overcame the powerful West Indies team to win the cup. At the time, Kapil Dev's 175 runs against Africa set a world record. His goal aided India's World Cup campaign.

The Indian squad was led by Mohammad Azharuddin in 1992, 1996, and 1999. His 93 runs in the World Cup were his best score. He demonstrated to the world how to effectively manage a team. India advanced to the semi-finals of the 1996 World Cup when Azharuddin served as captain.

The team members were taught a workout regimen by Sourav Ganguly. Players learned to play courageously under his leadership. He was India's World Cup captain in 2003. He finished his World Cup campaign with 465 runs and three centuries.

India reached the World Cup finals in 2011 under M.S. Dhoni's leadership. India defeated Sri Lanka in the championship match to claim the World Cup. 91 runs were scored by Dhoni in that game. Under Dhoni's captaincy, India advanced to the 2015 World Cup semi-finals but fell to Australia.

India's 2019 World Cup team was captained by the charismatic former captain Virat Kohli. 2019 World Cup runs totalled 443 for him. He demonstrated the value of physical fitness in cricket.

Rohit Sharma will be the captain of team India in the 2023 World Cup. It will be interesting to see how far India will advance in its World Cup campaign with Rohit Sharma.
