Team Radio City caught up with the angry young woman of Bollywood, Sonakshi Sinha ahead of her upcoming release, ‘Akira’. As the actress is super-excited about her new release, Team RadioCity delves into the mind of the beauty with the brains.
Sonakshi, we’ve been seeing that the rushes of ‘Akira’ have got the people excited? So are you excited as well?
Sonakshi: I am. It’s been a while since I started shooting for the film, and now that it is nearing its release date, I am extremely kicked about it. Because the response to the trailer has been phenomenal. Never have any of my earlier trailers received such a response. So when the reception is good, you automatically, feel confident.
Earlier, you once told us that if you were not in films, you would have turned into sports. Because you’ve always been sports oriented which shows in your action sequences. Did you follow the Olympics?
Sonakshi: I could not because I’ve been busy shooting for ‘Noor’ and whatever time I get in between, I’ve been promoting ‘Akira’. So I haven’t really had the time to do anything for myself alone. But honestly, I’m loving it.
How many films do you shoot in a year?
Sonakshi: I used to shoot for three-four films in a year. But then, I started getting drained out so I told myself to take it easy. Hence, ‘Akira’ onwards, it is one film a year.
Tell us about the sports you used to play?
Sonakshi: I used to play all the sports. Like volleyball. I still play it whenever I find the time. Tennis, throwball, football, basketball, shotput, discus and swimming. For volleyball, I had reached the National level selections.
Is it? Then why did you leave sports?
Sonakshi: When I started studying fashion designing in college, there used to be so many assignments that I never got the time to play. But whenever we get a break on sets, I play a round of volleyball.
Since the film is based about college life, were there any nostalgic moments while shooting this film?
Sonakshi: Yes, I felt good about the fact that I had not beaten anyone up in college laughs. The situation never arose as such, because people used to look at me and stay away. I was triple my size and a very mean looking child. This is why people thought not to mess up with this one. Firstly, I’ve changed three colleges in five years. First year, I used to go to Jai Hind College, Churchgate by train. I did that for a year and on the 366th day, I realised that NM College is just close by from my house by five minutes. So I should study closer home. laughs. After 12th, I enrolled into fashion designing at SNDT University. I got very studious that I wouldn’t find time to play around. During my first and second year, I was into sports so I would get my volleyball gear and play. I only remember the first two years of college which I spent playing volleyball.
How did you train for this film?
Sonakshi: I had a brilliant trainer. His name is Kuldeep Singh Shashi. He trains Tiger Shroff for gymnastics. I thought I’d train for two-three months and start shooting. But then I decided to keep at it because I was more concerned about being convincing. But it has been of immense help. I feel flattered now when people compliment me saying that it looks very authentic and real.
So have you left the training post the completion of the film?
Sonakshi: I have, but not because the film is over. But because I’ve gotten busy with my newer films. Some of that training has been helpful while shooting for ‘Force 2’. But yes, I prefer playing a sport or doing mixed martial arts to keep myself active.
So what are the bad habits that you have that you want to get rid of?
Sonakshi: I am a late sleeper. If I am not shooting I sleep by two or three. Even if I am shooting I don’t sleep before one. So, that is one bad thing about me.
Which is your favourite song from the film, coming to the soundtrack?
Sonakshi: My favourite is ‘Rajj Rajj Ke’. Though I’ve sung a cover of it, the original has been sung by Nahid Afrin who was a contestant on a singing reality show with Vishal Dadlani and me. When we were doing the show, I had promised Nahid that she would get to sing for me in this film. I’m glad that Vishal could give her this opportunity.
But now that you sing as well, why haven’t you sung for the film?
Sonakshi: I’ve been singing for promotions but I want that people discover Nahid’s voice.
You did get a lot of injuries while shooting for the film, didn’t you?
Sonakshi: I had done a lot of strenuous, rigorous and physically demanding action, so I kept pulling a muscle. A nerve in my wrist had strained. Once, my knee got severed while performing a kick. So you have to be extra cautious and careful.
What has been the best thing that has happened to you while making this film?
Sonakshi: I think the fact that people can see that I can offer more than what I do has been very overwhelming. They are now taking notice of another side of me.
Which is your favourite film by your director, A.R Murugadoss?
Sonakshi: For now, ‘Akira’. smiles. But I’d say Ghajini and his Tamil film, ‘Katthi’ which I just saw recently.
Lastly, your message for all your fans who are reading this right now?
Sonakshi: Come to the theatres from 2nd September. Show us your support and love because it is a film by A.R Murugadoss sir, so surely you would not be disappointed.
