Globally renowned composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have decided to separate after nearly 29 years of marriage. The news came as a shock to fans worldwide, given the couple’s longstanding and private relationship. Their separation highlights the emotional complexities of a marriage spanning decades, leaving many reflecting on the challenges of modern relationships.
Rahman and Saira were married in 1995 and share three children—Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen. The announcement of their decision came through a joint statement issued by Saira’s lawyer, which emphasised the emotional strain in their relationship.
The statement read, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and her husband, Mr. A R. Rahman, have made the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship... the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap.”
Rahman later addressed the separation on social media, expressing his emotions poetically: “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end... Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again.”

She praised the couple’s dignified approach, noting, “For 29 years, they have led a very dignified life, and they’re not changing that just because things may not work out as a fairytale ending.”

The couple’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, confirmed the separation, describing it as a mutual decision. She stated, “The divorce hasn`t happened yet. I am representing both of them. I can`t reveal the reason, but it is a marriage of 29 years. In every marriage, ups and downs are common. It is a painful decision, but it is a joint decision.
