Bollywood and politics go hand in hand, especially when a controversial movie nears its release. It could be Padmaavat that faced the backlash from the regional politicians or Chhapaak when Deepika Padukone`s one visit to Jawaharlal Neru University (JNU) amid the anti-national protests impacted the movie`s box office collection.
Somehow, these political connections seem to have a way to connect to the actress`s movies. With Chhapaak, Deepika Padukone made her debut as a producer. It was a film made by Meghna Gulzar. The film seemed to have received a decent response after its trailer was released, thanks to the prosthetics done on the actress.
It took just one visit to JNU amidst the anti-national slogans and anti-CAA protests that enraged the audience, and tweets of boycotting Deepika`s movie Chhapaak became a trend.
In a recent interview, the filmmaker opened up about the same and confirmed that the actress`s political involvement was impacting the movie`s box office collection. She even said the entire incident derailed the film`s motive for highlighting an acid attack survivor`s life.
"I am sure that the answer is pretty obvious. Yes, of course, it made a dent in the film. Because the conversation went from acid violence, which I intended the film to amplify, to somewhere else. So, of course, it impacted the film. There is no denying that," Meghna Gulzar said at an event.
Before heading to JNU, Deepika Padukone was asked about her views on the violence against students at the JNU campus. She said, “I feel proud to see that we aren’t scared to express ourselves... I think the fact that we are thinking about the country and its future... Whatever our point of view, it’s nice to see.”
However, both the filmmaker and the actress are past the incident. This year saw Deepika deliver two mega blockbusters, Pathaan and Jawan, both of which entered the 1000 crore club. Her next release, Fighter, has already garnered enough attention to become one of the most anticipated movies.
As for Meghna Gulzar, her next release, Sam Bahadur, starring Vicky Kaushal, will be released on Friday, December 1, in cinemas near you.
