Dev Anand and Suraiya`s Tragic Love Story
Dev Anand was one of the most celebrated and successful actors in Bollywood. He was active in the industry after his debut in 1946 and has worked in more than 100 films since then. Apart from his acting talent, the Guide actor was also popular for his whirlwind romance with co-actress Suraiya.
During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dev Anand was becoming more and more popular for his handsome looks. He had throngs of women vying for his attention. During this time, he worked on multiple films with actress and singer Suraiya. The duo appeared together in films like Vidya, Shair, Afsar, Nili, Sanam, Do Sitare, and others.
One incident that became the onset of their whirlwind romance happened during the filming of the song `Kinare Kinare Chale Jayen Ge` from the film `Vidya`. The boat in which the couple was shooting for the music video capsized, and Dev Anand saved Suraiya from drowning. After that, the couple was in a relationship for about four years.
However, fate had different plans for the couple, as Suraiya’s family strongly opposed the relationship. Suraiya’s maternal uncle and maternal grandmother were against Dev Anand and Suraiya getting married as they belonged to different religious faiths. Although the couple planned to elope, Suraiya had to heed her family’s wish after they threatened to kill Dev Anand if they married.

After the couple broke off their relationship in 1951, they never worked again with each other in any films. Suraiya remained unmarried for her entire life after that, until she passed away in 2004. On the other hand, Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartik and had two children, Suneil Anand and Devina Anand. It is believed that he was stuck in a loveless marriage until his demise in 2011 due to cardiac arrest.
In his biography titled Romancing With Life, Dev Anand wrote about Suraiya. “I fell in love for the first time. We all know what first love does to a human being. Then the agony of not getting it. Suddenly hope was aroused after being encouraged, but again disillusionment crept in when nothing happened,” he wrote.

In the subconscious, we had become emotionally attached to each other. Suddenly, one day, I felt I was desperately in love with Zeenat – and wanted to say so to her.”
