The much-awaited anime adaptation of Valmiki’s epic, Ramayana: The Legend of Lord Rama, is set to hit theatres on January 24, 2025. The celebrated Japanese-Indian animated film, originally released in 1993, will finally grace the big screen, offering audiences a 4K cinematic experience in multiple languages. With its rich storytelling and unique blend of Indian and Japanese animation styles, this adaptation promises to enchant a new generation of viewers.
Farhan Akhtar shared the news on Instagram, expressing his excitement about the release. He wrote, “The wait is over. Experience India’s greatest epic in all its glory! Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama releasing on January 24, 2025, in Hindi, English, Tamil, and Telugu in 4K experience. Trailer out in 2 days!”
The film is a collaborative effort by Indian animator Ram Mohan and Japanese filmmaker Yugo Sako. Created using traditional hand-drawn animation, the movie retains its visual charm and authenticity. Music for the original film was composed by Vanraj Bhatia, adding a soulful touch to the narrative.
Acclaimed screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, known for his work on Baahubali, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and RRR, has been brought on board to oversee the creative adaptation of the latest version.

The theatrical release is being handled by Geek Pictures India, Anil Thadani’s AA Films, and Excel Entertainment, helmed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.

Originally screened in India during the 24th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 1993, the film gained popularity through television reruns in the early 2000s. However, it was never released in theatres until now. A Multilingual Release and Stellar Voice Cast
For the first time, the movie will be available in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, along with its original English version. In the earlier Hindi version, Arun Govil voiced Lord Rama, Namrata Sawhney brought Sita to life, and the late Amrish Puri lent his voice to Raavan.
