Randeep Hooda: People don’t get my Haryanvi humour

It’s odd that Randeep Hooda’s 20-year career didn’t present him an opportunity to feature in a comedy. But it’s never too late to try something new. The actor will take a stab at the genre with Unfair And Lovely, the social comedy that takes on India’s obsession with fair skin. “I have a strong sense of humour, and a peculiar one at that. People don’t get my Haryanvi humour,” laughs the actor, glad to showcase his light-hearted side on screen. The film comes as a breath of fresh air after his serious roles in Love Aaj Kal 2020, Extraction 2020 and Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai.
Through Ileana D’Cruz’s protagonist, the movie chronicles the deep-rooted social prejudices battled by a dusky woman. At a time when there is an increased dialogue about colour bias and a leading skin-lightening cream changed its name to propagate inclusivity, Hooda is happy to play his part in driving social change. “This film is dear to me because it goes beyond entertainment. It’s not a slapstick comedy. Some movies have a strong message while being entertaining; this is one such film.” The unit wrapped up the shoot last November after an extensive schedule in Haryana under the supervision of screenplay writer-turned-director Balwinder Singh Janjua.
