Ranveer`s Dhurandhar attracts only 900 on day 1 in Japan
Despite rewriting box office records worldwide, Ranveer Singh`s Dhurandhar franchise has failed to replicate its success in Japan. While the two films in the franchise have collectively grossed more than Rs 3,100 crore globally, the latest release has opened to a lukewarm response in the Japanese market.
Dhurandhar hit theatres across Japan on July 10, 2026, with a release on nearly 80 screens. However, trade reports suggest the film struggled to attract audiences during its opening weekend. It reportedly failed to feature among Japan`s top 25 films on any day of its debut weekend, highlighting its underwhelming performance despite extensive pre-release promotions.
On its opening day, the film recorded 449 admissions by 2 pm across 57 locations. Collections remained largely flat during the second half of the day, with the final count reaching only around 900 admissions across 80 locations. The modest turnout meant the film fell short of expectations and failed to establish a strong foothold in the country.
With only around 900 tickets sold on day one, Dhurandhar also missed the mark to enter the list of Japan`s top 10 biggest opening days for Indian films. The 10th position is currently occupied by Salman Khan`s Tiger 3, which registered around 1,300 admissions on its opening day. Interestingly, Pushpa 2 had also failed to secure a place among the top 10 Indian openers in Japan.
Among Indian releases, RRR continues to dominate the Japanese box office with an impressive 8,230 admissions on its first day. It is followed by Saaho, Kalki 2898 AD, Pathaan, Salaar, Jawan, Rangasthalam, Devara, Baahubali 2, and Tiger 3.
Despite its disappointing start in Japan, the Dhurandhar franchise remains one of Indian cinema`s biggest commercial successes. The sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, emerged as the second highest-grossing Indian film of all time after Dangal, collecting Rs 1,813 crore worldwide. The first film, released in December 2025, earned over Rs 1,307 crore globally, taking the franchise`s cumulative worldwide collection beyond Rs 3,100 crore.
Written and directed by Aditya Dhar, the franchise is produced by Lokesh Dhar and Jyoti Deshpande under Jio Studios and B62 Studios. It features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera and Danish Pandor.
