Thappad Trailer: A collective slap on the consciousness of a flawed patriarchal conditioning

Dear Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sushila Sinha, before I begin to rave about how much have I loved and appreciated the well-cut trailer of your next film, ‘Thappad’, I’d like to first say this on behalf of every Indian woman, Thank You.
Irrespective of what the fate of the film beholds, I’d like to thank you both for even attempting to tell this story and to the producers for ensuring that this film gets a theatrical release. In grave time when toxic patriarchy continues to gag the voices of women and stipulate their existence, ‘Thappad’ is a glimmer of hope.
In less than three minutes, the film tries to drive the point straight away that everything is certainly not fair in love. Love is important but respect and equality should also be mandatory. What I must tip off too to the makers are the end credits that acknowledge the inclusion of their mothers names.
‘Thappad’ is the story of Amrita Taapsee who questions the foundation of her relationship that is stirred and shaken when her seemingly perfect husband Pavail Gulati slaps her. Can a slap be overlooked as an act of love or will it prove as a trigger to Amrita’s consciousness?
The sheer acting talent on board is admirable. Dia Mirza, Kumud Mishra, Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvi Azmi, Ram Kapoor, Manav Kaul, Geetika Vidya, Maya Sarao, Naila Grewal, Siddhant Karnick, Ankur Rathee, and Santanu Ghatak look promising to add heft to the narrative with their roles.
‘Thappad’ releases in cinemas on February 28, 2020.
