Today marks Guru Nanak Jayanti, Guru Nanak Devs 553rd birth anniversary of the God of Sikhs. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the flagbearer of peace, strength, unity, and compassion. Always spreading the message of live and let live a simple and happy life, Guru Nanak Dev is believed to have started the Sikh community and Sikhism religion. On Gurpurab, lets take you through Bollywood movies that glorified the Punjabi culture and Sikhism as a whole.
1. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha
This movie does perfect justice to being on the list. And who better than Sunny Deol to portray a proud Sardar? There have been many movies that showed the ghastly event of partition and what Hindi, Muslims, and Sikhs had to go through. While we wouldn't rate this as one of the best movies that speak about the India-Pakistan partition, Gadar is an ideal Bollywood movie that florified the essence of Sikhism. With Tara Singh (played by Sunny Deol) and Sakina's (Ameesha Patel) tragic yet epic love story, it shows what people across the caste and borders had to go through when a line of control was drawn by the Britishers.
2. Love Aaj Kal
We're talking about the first part of the Imtiaz Ali directorial here. Just imagine Dilli in the early 80's, Purana Killa, and a love saga! While young Saif Ali Khan lived the old Rishi Kapoor's story, Love Aaj Kal shows how deeply Sikhs feel everything—love, hatred, strength, and even the will to fight for what you want. If you ask us personally, this was Saif's best movie after Dil Chahta Hai.3. Rang De Basanti
Speaking of bravery, not every superhero wears a cape. Some are simply happy in dying for their friends who unconditionally serve for the country. Rang De Basanti shows the true spirit of a Sikh who always believes in truth and justice. We're running out of words for the way the entire cast showcased the spirit of Punjabi culture. Aamir Khan to Kirron Kher, everybody in this film gave us goosebumps in every scene.
4. Kesari
When the Pashtun invaders challenge Akshay Kumar by saying, "Tum yeh jung jeet nahi sakte," his iconic response is still echoing in our minds. "Jeet Toh Hum Tab Hi Gaye The Jab Humne Ladne Ka Faisla Kiya Tha... Baaki Toh Marna Maarna Hai... Chalta Rahega.”
Only a true Sikh warrior can depict unconditional bravery. They were only 11 Sikhs fighting an army of 10,000 Pashtuns. While the Pashtuns won the battle, the proud Sardars conquered the hearts.
Kesari's iconic song Teri Mitti will give you goosebumps every time you listen to it. Not every superhero wears a cape; some have turbans on their heads and Guru Nanak Dev in their hearts.
5. Son of Sardar
A slice-of-life take on how light-hearted and fun men with turbans can be, Son of Sardar is a comedy drama headlined by Ajay Devgn, Sonkashi Sinha, and Sanjay Dutt in prominent roles. The second part of the action comedy will see a rather spiritual take. Reports confirm that the entire ensemble will be coming together for the Son of Sardaar 2.
6. Jab We Met
We've seen actors portraying Sikhs and entertaining us. But the Imtiaz Ali film had a Sikhdi of Bhatinda taking the audience on a wild and fun ride as she instantly became our favourite.Kareena Kapoor as Geet in Jab We Met was the perfect example of how chirpy, full of life, and beautiful Sikhdis can be.
7. Singh Is Kinng
What happens when Happy, a notorious villager, lands up in a foreign land to reunite his childhood friend with his ailing father but realises the latter is an underworld don?Singh Is Kinng is an action comedy that brings back Akshay Kumar embracing his Punjabi roots.
