Fathers have always been portrayed as strict and unfriendly in Bollywood movies. But there are some roles that shatter the stereotype and show how they can be your best friends and biggest cheerleaders. This International Mens Day 2024, lets have a look at some of the coolest Bollywood men who broke stereotypes in more ways than one.
1. Narottam Mishra in Bareilly Ki Barfi
Not every battle is won by words; some purely need silent actions. Fighting the battle of societal judgments, Panjak Tripathi silently yet strongly supports Bitti Mishra, portrayed by Kriti Sanon. This movie is about an unconventional father-daughter duo living in Bareilly, with her mother calling Bitti a "paraya dhan." Narottam Mishra rejects the idea of going against Bitti's happiness, is liberal enough to let her follow her individuality, and would never want her to compromise on anything.
He may not be vocal, but this daddy cool has always had his daughter's back.
2. Farooq Shaikh in Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani
A father-son relationship can be quite complicated, or rather, restricted to evoking their feelings. But not in this case. Farooq Shaikh was the proud father of Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor), who wanted to chase every nook and cranny of the globe. He supported his dreams more than his own and assured him that he would always have his back. He may have had a 10-minute role in the movie, but he made sure to leave an ever-lasting effect on us.
His last words to his son, “Go where you wish, do what you want, but remember that I’m always by your side,” are something that every child would want to hear from their fathers.
3. Champak Bansal in Angrezi Medium
Parents can go above and beyond to fulfill their child's dream. And Champak Bansal (Irrfan Khan) exhibited the same in Angrezi Medium. He pulled all the strings together to make sure his daughter Tarika (Radhika Madan) could go to London to pursue her dreams. He faced every hurdle with a smile, just to see his daughter smiling. And you know what's wonderful? Despite belonging to a Tier 2 city, not even once did he have the wildest thought of marrying her off.
4. Ishwarchand Thakur in Waqt The Race Against Time
Men have their own way of teaching you life lessons. When Ishwarchand (Amitabh Bachchan) falls terribly sick with a chronic disease, he decides to throw his reckless son Aditya (Akshay Kumar) out of the house for him to take up some responsibilities on his shoulders.Initially, he hates his father, but when Aditya learns the truth, he regrets not spending enough time with his family. Somebody has said it right: spend every minute with your loved ones because life's extremely unpredictable.
This movie truly moves you. It is impossible not to end up sniffling or shedding a little tear.
5. Sachin Sandhu in Thappad
Portrayed beautifully by Kumud Mishra, at times you need someone who can be your pillar of support and doesn't doubt you. When he learns his daughter Amrita is pregnant and asks, “Am I doing the right thing, dad?” he confidently says, “If you are listening to your heart, then you must be doing the right thing.”If you think he is a biased dad, raising his voice against his son-in-law, you would be surprised to know he didn't keep quiet when his son was to be punished.
But he isn't without flaws. When he realizes he didn't ignore the casual sexism with his wife, he stands up to correct his past mistakes. He also teaches Amrita to move ahead because the past will never define her.
6. Bhashkor Banerjee in Piku
A father can be your best friend who will keep on annoying you in more ways than one. Bhashkor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) plays a similar on-screen father to Deepika Padukone's character, Piku. While the two share a relatable bond that makes us nod every time they argue, they cannot even do without each other.
A father who encourages his daughter every time society slams its expectations, Bhashkor ensured Piku became independent enough to choose the life path on her own.
