Kajol is one of the finest actresses weve ever had in Bollywood. Her expressions, the way she imbibes the character, and the finesse in her art is what makes her a versatile artist. From mainstream Bollywood movies to OTT platforms, Kajol has ruled it all. As she celebrates her 47th birthday, lets revisit some of her iconic characters. Happy birthday Kajol.
1. Kajol as Simran in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - 1995
The Bollywood classic was way ahead of its time. Playing the main lead Simran, this movie is about how a girl in the 90s tries to break free and fight for the love of her life. Back in that generation, people lived and breathed on patriarchy. How Simran shatters the "no love, only arranged marriage" mindset and how her mother (Farida Jalal) supports her going against the society, says a lot about how the movie was more than just romance and 'Palattt!'.The first scene, last scene, and everything in between made the audience weep and long for such a love story. Sharing the screen with Shah Rukh Khan, who portrayed her love interest Raj, theirs was a hit couple and still is considered to be the one with best chemistry.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenege is not a movie, it is a saga. All DDLJ fans, can we have a "ting-a-ting ting ting ting ting ting-ting tingggg!" If you sang this with us, you're a true Kajol fan.
2. Kajol as Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hain
This movie marked Karan Johar's directorial debut and Kajol's most loved character. Portraying Rahul's (Shah Rukh Khan) best friend Anjali, this is a love triangle where an 8-year-old girl tries to reunite two unrequited lovers. Weird storyline but great acting. The movie did well, so much so, that it went on to become the biggest blockbusters of 1999.We could all relate to Anjali - a girl trying hard to fit in within the societal definition of how one should dress, trying to cope up with her first heartbreak, and then, choosing the toxic guy over a nice chap. Aman, we feel you! Jokes apart, Kajol nailed her performance and the "Rahul is a cheater, he is a cheater. Cheaaateeerr!" is still etched in our minds.
3. Kajol as Anuradha in Tribhanga
After playing the bubbly girl next door, it was time for her to break the stereotypes. After doing movies like Gupt where the actress played a negative role, her Netflix debut Tribhanga showed her as a arrogant yet caring daughter. Playing a daughter to Nayantara (Tanvi Azmi) and mother to Masha (Mithila Palkar), Anuradha (Kajol) narrates a story that highlights a wavy mother-daughter bond.Seeing her play a strong-headed character was a treat for our eyes. If you haven't watched this masterpiece, put everything aside and kick-in your weekend.
Radio City wishes Kajol a very happy birthday!
