His performance in ‘Newton’ fetched him a Special Mention at the National Film Awards 2018.
But due to his role in ‘Wasseypur’, the actor was typecast for gangster roles mostly. Instances vary from ‘Dabangg 2’, ‘Singham Returns’, ‘Anybody Can Dance’, ‘Rangrezz’ and ‘Fukrey’. But it was in 2017 that he bagged his first lead with ‘Gurgaon’ and followed it up with the back-to-back successes in ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and ‘Newton’.
After small roles in ‘Apaharan’ ‘Dharam’, ‘ Mithya’, ‘Shaurya’, ‘Chintu Ji’ and brief run in television with ‘Bahubali’ and ‘Powder’, Tripathi’s breakthrough role came in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.
Having graduated from NSD in 2004, Tripathi did a lot of bit roles in films for which he was sometimes discredited. His first Hindi film, ‘Run’ starring Abhishek Bachchan, does not find a mention of his name,
He was rejected twice by the National School of Drama, Delhi. He was finally selected on the third attempt.
Is an ardent fan of neighbourhood actor/friend Manoj Bajpayee. The latter once stayed at the Maurya hotel where Tripathi worked as a kitchen supervisor. On check-out, Bajpayee left his slippers behind which Tripathi secured and kept with him as a souvenir.
His father wanted him to become a doctor. Hence, he was sent to Patna. Tripathi did a lot of theatre in his college days and was also an active participant in student politics. He was once jailed for leading a student campaign against Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1993.
As part of his village theatre group, Tripathi never shyed away from playing a feminine character.
Is married to Mridula, a school teacher with whom he has a young daughter Aashi. Tripathi is a firm flag-bearer of feminism. He is also an excellent cook and prefers picking up vegetables himself.
