Her career involves many awards and accolades. She received the National Award for Umrao Jaan in 1981, three Filmfare awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. In 2010, she was awarded the Padma Shri, Indias fourth highest civilian honour from the Government of India by the then President, Pratibha Patil.
She was rumored to have been married to actor Vinod Mehra in 1973. But in 2004, she denied being married to him calling him just a well-wisher. Rekha now lives a disconnected and an introverted life in her Mumbai bungalow.
Rekha who has been linked up with film stars like Vinod Mehra, Jeetendra, Kiran Kumar and of course, Amitabh Bachchan ended up marrying a Delhi based businessman, Mukesh Aggrawal. But her bad fate led to their divorce and even worse, Mukeshs suicide.
Later on, she was seen more in supporting roles than lead roles and appeared even as a mother and grandmother in a few movies. She has also made statements like If I ever had a son, I would want him to be like Hrithik Roshan. She fulfilled her dream by playing Hrithiks mother in the movie Koi... Mil Gaya -2003, as well as his grandma in Krrish -2006.
She was also in the news for her affair with Amitabh Bachchan after he was married to Jaya Badhuri. Strangely enough, they soon appeared together in the movie Silsila -1981. The movie was about a married man, who is in love with another woman. Rekha played the other woman. That was the last time the two were seen together on screen.
After this Rekha continued to deliver one box office hit after another, starting from Nagin -1976, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar -1978, Mr. Natwarlal -1979, Khubsoorat -1980, Umrao Jaan -1981 to Khoon Bhari Maang -1988 along with many others.
However, she soon decided to take her career more seriously and started practising Yoga to lose weight. She took Hindi speech lessons and started her training in dance which led to a new and transformed Rekha who charmed the Indian film industry.
Born to Gemini Ganeshan the Tamil actor, and Pushpavalli - the popular Telugu actress, Rekha began her acting career as a child artiste. She acted for the first time with her mom in a Telugu film.
