Ten Bollywood Films that capture the beauty of West Bengal
The recently released Amitabh Bachchan-Vidya Balan-Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer was entirely filmed in Kolkata. It is the first film to be filmed at the historic Victorian-era Writers Building.
Scenes where Piku takes Rana for a Kolkata tour reflects the essence of the city. The shooting took place at the Howrah Bridge in the citys Shyambazar neighbourhood and at Bishop Lefroy Road.
Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor pursue Priyanka Chopras affection through the lanes and festivities of Kolkata. During filming in Kolkata, some old native professionals were hired to create the set for the Durga Puja song sequence under the Howrah Bridge to give it a realistic look of the 1980s. Other locations also included the Khottadih Colliery area and the Asansol-Durgapur Police area of Eastern Coalfields Limited.
The period romance between Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha was filmed in Kolkata and rural parts of West Bengal. Scenes involving Ranveer, Sonakshi and actor Barun Chanda were shot at the 11th century Jain temple in Deulghata and Belkuri, despite it being a pre-dominantly Maoist area. The Itachuna Rajbari in Hooghly District and Purulia also served as primary locations for the films schedule.
The magic of Darjeeling and Kolkata was beautifully captured in Barfi!. Old world romance would not mean the same had the picturesque locations of West Bengal not served as backdrops.
Shoojit Sircar grew up in Delhi but being a Bengali, he doesnt forget his Bengali roots. Post the crucial marriage in the movie, the focus shifts to Kolkata, where the city is showcased in a contemporary way.
Kolkata contributed to the films success as much as its actors did. Shooting locations included Kalighat Metro station, Nonapukur tram depot, Kumartuli, Howrah Bridge, Victoria Memorial and old houses of North Kolkata. The climax sequence was shot at the Ballygunge neighbourhood of Kolkata.
The flashback scenes between Saif Ali Khan and Giselle Monteiro were filmed in Kolkata. The song Aaj Din Chadeya is infused with the old-world charm of the city.
Primarily filmed in Kolkata with a small portion shot in Darjeeling, Parineeta was very much a story of Kolkata as much as of Lolitas. The toy train of Darjeeling captured in the song Kasto Mazaa was reminiscent of Mere Sapno Ki Rani from Aradhana.
Sanjay Leela Bhansalis magnum opus starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit had elaborate sets set up in key locations of Kolkata, to give the 1900s charm of the city.
