On World Poetry Day, lets celebrate the beautiful and soothing poetries we explored through Bollywood movies. Poets and lyricists of Bollywood, this ones for you!
Poetry and Hindi film industry have a connection ever since we've known how cinema can move us. Expressing feelings through words in a poetic manner is one of the few things Bollywood has done rightly. Whether it is a box-office hit or a critically-acclaimed movie, inserting a poetic scene in the movie and making it look effortless adds just the right kind of feels.
From the early 80s till today, poetry has evolved, but the feeling - that has stayed constant. On World Poetry Day, let's revisit some beautiful and soul-soothing poetries that were discovered through Bollywood movies. A mix-bag of old and new films, everyone associated with making music for that one project play a big role in introducing these gems to us.
"Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai
Ki zindagi teri zulfon ki narm chhaaon mein guzarne paati
to shaadaab ho bhi sakti thi.
Ye ranj-o-gham ki siyaahi jo dil pe chhaayi hai
Teri nazar ki shuaaon main kho bhi sakti thi.
Magar ye ho na sakaa, aur ab ye aalam hai
Ki tu nahin, tera gham, teri justjoo bhi nahin.
Guzar rahi hai kuchh is tarah zindagi jaise,
ise kisi ke sahaare ki aarzoo bhi nahin.
Naa koi raah, naa manzil, naa roshni ka suraag
Bhatak rahi hai andheron main zindagi meri.
Inhi andheron mein reh jaaunga kabhi kho kar
Main jaanta hoon meri hum-nafas, magar yoon hi
Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai."

2. Dil Aakhir Tu Kyun Rota Hain - Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara:
You knew this was going to make it to the list. One of the factors that was highly praised in this film were Farhan Akhtar's poetries. The actor even took to twitter, thanking his father and lyricist of the movie, Javed Akhtar, for penning down such mesmerizing poems. “It’s so fantastic that everyone loves the poems in ZNMD. Thank you pa for injecting soul into the film with your gifted hand", he tweeted.
And rightly so, because Javed Saab has once again weaved magic that touched our souls. Our personal favorite from the movie, Dil Aakhir Tu Kyun Rota hain exudes the beauty of the ups and downs of life. A way to console one's aching heart, the poem reads something like:

"Jab jab dard ka baadal chaya
Jab ghum ka saya lehraya
Jab aansoo palkon tak aya
Jab yeh tanha dil ghabraya
Humne dil ko yeh samjhaya,
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai
Duniya mein yunhi hota hai
Yeh jo gehre sannate hain
Waqt ne sabko hi baante hain
Thoda ghum hai sabka qissa
Thodi dhoop hai sabka hissa
Aankh teri bekaar hi nam hai
Har pal ek naya mausam hai
Kyun tu aise pal khota hai
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai"
3. Jab Tak Hain Jaan - Jab Tak Hain Jaan:
Shah Rukh Khan is a poetry in motion whenever he comes on the big screen. His sizzling chemistry with Katrina Kaif in this movie could be felt in every scene. The poetry in this movie says a lot about a love that's long-gone but never forgotten. The poem Jab Tak Hain Jaan instantly became a proposal-worthy prose that went viral on social media.
The poem reads something like:
"Teri aankhon ki namkeen mastiyan
Teri hansi ki beparwaah gustakhiyaan
Teri zulfon ki leharaati angdaiyaan
Nahi bhoolunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan
Tera haath se haath chhodna
Tera saayon se rukh modna
Tera palat ke phir na dekhna
Nahin maaf karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan
Baarishon mein bedhadak tere naachne se
Baat baat pe bewajah tere roothne se
Chhoti chhoti teri bachkani badmashiyon se
Mohabbat karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan..
Tere jhoothe kasme vaadon se
Tere jalte sulagte khwabon se
Teri be-raham duaaon se
Nafrat karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan"

4. Kuch Door - Udaan:
One of the most underrated movies of Bollywood, the storytelling was exceptionally smooth and engaging. The movie is all about growing around a strict father/half-brother who curbs his son from pursuing his dream of becoming a writer. How Rajat Barmecha (Rohan) flees away from the toxic trap of his father Ronit Roy (Bhairav Singh) is beautifully summarized in the poem Kuch Door.
It goes something like:
"Jo lehron se aage nazar dekh paati toh tum jaan lete main kya sochta hoon,
Wo aawaz tumko bhi jo bhed jaati toh tum jaan lete main kya sochta hoon.
Zid ka tumhare jo parda sarakta toh khidkiyon se aage bhi tum dekh paate,
Aankhon se aadaton ki jo palken hatate toh tum jaan lete main kya sochta hoon.
Meri tarah khud par hota zara bharosa toh kuchh door tum bhi saath-saath aate,
Rang meri aankhon ka baant-te zara sa toh kuchh door tum bhi saath-saath aate,
Nasha aasmaan ka jo choomta tumhe bhi, hasraten tumhari naya janm paatin,
Khud doosre janam mein meri udaan chhoone kuchh door tum bhi saath-saath aate"

5. Talash Hain - Ae Dil Hain Mushkil
A spectacular portrayal of unrequited love, ADHM is a movie that talks about a love so deeply imbibed in your heart, no matter what you do, you cannot get over it. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays a role of a Shayara (poetress) who is a sight for the sore eyes. And her poetries, a calm to the craziness. Talash Hain is a prose that expresses the longing of a love that is beyond the monotony of life.
The prose goes something like this -
"Sau andheron mein bhi roshan ho, us haqeeqat ki talash hain,
Teri dehleez pe chhod aaye, us mohabbat ki talash hain,
Jhukne ki ibaadat ko toh samjhe jahaan walon,
Katne pe joh haasil ho, us jannat ki talash hain"
