Heeramandi was originally a grain market called Hira di Mandi, named after Heera Singh`s son, Dhian Singh Dogra.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Mughals brought women from areas like Afghanistan and Uzbekistan to perform Kathak for their entertainment.

During the national uprising of 1857, Heeramandi became a hideout for Indian soldiers against the British armies. They also stored weapons in these kothas.
