The Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 was filed against social reformer Karsandas Mulji, after he published an article in his Gujarati weekly newspaper, Satyaprakash.

The article specifically targeted Yadunathji Brijratanji Maharaj, a prominent sect leader, and criticised the practices of the Pushtimarg sect.

In his article, Karsandas accused Yadunath of immoral behaviour and alleged that the sect endorsed practices involving sexual misconduct.

Feeling defamed, Jadunathji sued Mulji and the publisher for libel in the Bombay High Court.

The case became a cause celebre, sparking debates about freedom of speech, religious tradition, and social reform in colonial India.
