Everyone has at least one ideal person in their life whom they look after. For Raju Srivastav, that person was Amitabh Bachchan. Big B was the one who pulled the comedian Mumbai for the first time and inspired him for his comic career. Raju Srivastava grew up watching every one of Amitabh's movies in the cinema hall. We can still find Amitabh's photograph at the comedian's home.
Raju Srivastava recently died at the age of 58 in the hospital. In a recent conversation with the comedian's brother, he told how Raju landed up in Mumbai. He said that in 1982 when Srivastava was 18, Bachchan sustained a near-fatal injury while shooting for a film. Ace comedian rushed to the hospital just to get a glimpse of the man that did not happen. Moreover, he joined the crowds and waited outside the Breach Candy Hospital where Bachchan was admitted.
His brother said, 'Raju Bhai would eat 'vada pav' every day and stand outside the hospital and pray for Bachchan Ji's life. He had come to see Amitabh Bachchan Ji as he considered him a god. He slept on the bridge of Dadar station, in parks, and stayed in jhopadpattis (slums). He would sift through newspaper ads to find out about comedy shows in the city.'
'He got beaten many times for this by our mother. During Independence Day celebrations in school, he would imitate him. He would also dance in 'baraats' whenever Amitabh Bachchan songs were played in Kanpur,' he said recalling their childhood days.
Talking about how Raju got a chance in the entertainment industry, he continued by saying, 'After seeing bhai's comedy, Gulshan Kumar offered him an audio cassette show named 'Hasna Mana Hai'. He did about 25 to 30 such shows for labels like T-Series and Venus.'
On August 10, the comedian got a severe attack while working out and was directly admitted to the hospital. The comedian may have left us but he will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace, Raju Srivastava!
