MARCH 08,2023

March 8 marks International Women's Day and we love how the world is changing every time a woman supports another. They say a woman can either be another woman's biggest enemy or her best friend. With Bollywood massively influencing society with its stories, let's have a look at movies that showcased the power of women supporting one another.

Gone are the days when women of this era will be a damsel in distress. They are fierce, ferocious, kind, strong, and wild. They know their shit and believe in empowering other women. Bollywood movies like English Vinglish, Queen, Mardaani, Shabash Mithu, and more are some classic examples of how society can change when women uplift and advocate for one another.

Let's see which Bollywood movies have made it to the Women's Day celebration list.

1. Queen - 2014

Who said you need a man to complete you when you have your best friend? When Rani's (Kangana Ranaut) fiance Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) calls off the wedding, she finds the lost confidence and support in her co-incidental best friend Vijaylaxmi (Lisa Haydon). A movie that has redefined the meaning of feminism and self-love, Queen is a perfect example of how women empowering each other can help you blossom into a beautiful version of yourself.

2. English Vinglish - 2012

Who said you cannot find a wing woman in your family? Shashi (Sridevi) and Radha's (Priya Anand) relationship was more than just of an aunt and niece. Radha encouraged and motivated Shashi to reinvent herself by learning English, a quality she was always belittled for. We love how the two women complimented and uplifted each other. Do you have a Radha to your Shashi in your family?

Directed by a woman based on a woman's story for the women who seek motivation to step out of their comfort zone.

3. Mardaani - 2014

A woman cannot be fierce and strong, said someone unfamiliar with the power of an unapologetically ferocious female. Rani Mukerji was on a mission to uncover the merciless child-trafficking cartel in Delhi. While she faces several hurdles and challenges, this Mardaani is not here to give up. This movie not only proved Rani's capabilities as an actress but also showcased her fearless side.

4. Thappad - 2020

"Ek thappad hain par nahi maar sakta," a dialogue that conveyed the entire movie's message in just one line. Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) could've chosen to stay silent and go on with her life after her husband Vikram (Pavail Gulati) slapped her amidst a celebration. But she chose to retaliate by demanding a divorce. While society judged her for the same, her lawyer Netra (Maya Sarao) and neighbor Shivani (Dia Mirza) stood by her like a rock.

5. Mom - 2017

If you think a mother is empathetic and emotional all the time, try harming her family and see her become voracious. Sridevi is on a mission to find and punish her daughter's rapists and she won't stop until she kills all of them. Of course, without being caught. The wittiness and fearlessness in Mom is a message to the world to never mess with today's women.

6. Shabash Mithu - 2022

Every field is dominated by women today. Be it sports, movies, or business. And Mithali Raj's biopic is a quintessential example of the same. How Mithali Raj (portrayed by Taapsee Pannu) supports and uplifts her fellow cricketers is something to imbibe in every sportsperson.

7. No One Killed Jessica - 2011

Yet another powerful portrayal of woman empowerment where Sabrina Lall (Vidya Balan) joins forces with reported Meera Gaity (Rani Mukerji) to fight against the Indian judiciary to seek justice for her sister's murder by the son of an influential politician. If you think women can only gossip and pull each other down, No One Killed Jessica should be your go-to Women's Day movie.

8. Gangubai Kathiawadi - 2022

Do we even need to say anything about this masterpiece? When Gangubai (Alia Bhatt) steps out to empower and seek equal rights for sex workers in India, she sets an example of how a woman's power can be the shape-shifter of the stereotypical society.

Radio City wishes you all a Happy Women's Day. Celebrate your fierceness and kindness every day.
