Hollywood's heartthrob and popular actor Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing in FRIENDS, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment on Saturday. He was 54 when he died by alleged drowning. First responders found Perry unconscious in a bath tub and were unable to revive him, sources from law enforcement told the Los Angeles Times.
"We responded at 4:10 pm... It is a death investigation for a male in his 50s," a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said without confirming the name or identity of the victim.
Matthew Perry was best known for his portrayal of the satirical and wise-cracking Chandler Bing in the popular American sitcom FRIENDS. The show ran for 10 successful seasons, from 1994 to 2004. It still continues to be a comfort watch all across the globe.
Over the years, Chandler has garnered a fanbase from many nations, including India. His witty one-liners and sarcastic comebacks never failed to make the viewers laugh. Apart from this, it was his incredible chemistry with his on-screen wife, Monica Geller, played by Courtney Cox.
Along with Perry and Cox, the show also starred Jennifer Anniston, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow in the leading roles.
Apart from FRIENDS, Matthew was also known for his incredible acting in some Hollywood blockbusters like Three To Tango, The Ron Clark Story, 17 Again, and Fools Rush In, among others.
During his height of success, Perry battled an addiction to painkillers and alcohol and was rehabilitated for months. This was one of the reasons he gained weight in the mid-series of Friends.
In his memoir "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," published last year, the late actor wrote about how he spent millions of dollars in repeated attempts to get sober by going through detox dozens of times.
He wrote, "People would be surprised to know that I have mostly been sober since 2001. Save for about sixty or seventy little mishaps over the years." Matthew Perry dedicated the book to strugglers and addicts like himself.
American organization TMZ was the first to break the shocking news on Saturday. It also mentioned there were no drugs found at his place.
Reactions from Hollywood have been pouring in ever since the Matthew Perry death news went viral. Many actors took to social media and expressed their shock and grief.
"Oh no!!! Matthew Perry!! You sweet, troubled soul!" Mira Sorvino, who starred with the American-Canadian actor in the 1999 TV movie Parallel Lives.
Warner Bros. TV, which produced the TV show FRIENDS wrote, "We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry's passing. He was a true gift to us all. Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, and all of his fans."
Radio City extends heartfelt condolences to the Perry family. We love you, Chandler Bing. May your soul rest in peace.
