With Oscars 2025 approaching, it is time for India to give its official entry, keeping in mind the best movie released in 2024. Any guesses which movie would make it to the Academy Awards?

Kiran Rao's Laapata Ladies becomes India's official entry for Oscars 2025, leaving every movie lover proud and how. For the uninitiated, the story of Laapata Ladies revolves around a lighthearted and satirical take on patriarchy that does not get too heavy.

On Wednesday, the news took over the internet by storm. The film has left behind many notable and blockbuster movies released this year that were also on the list of being India's official entry to the Oscars.

On Monday, the Film Federation of India announced that the Kiran Rao directorial has been picked to be India's official entry to the prestigious globally known awards. It was chosen from the list of 29 odd films, including Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, Malayalam National Award winner Attam, and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light.

The decision was not an easy one. However, a 13-member committee headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua unanimously decided on Laapata Ladies for reckoning the best international film category at the Academy Awards.

Tamil film Maharaja, Telugu titles Kalki 2898 AD and Hanu-Man, along with Hindi releases like Swatantrya Veer Sawarkar and Article 370, were also on the list. Last year, the Malayalam film 2018: Everyone is a Hero was zeroed in as India's official Oscars entry.

For those who haven't seen this masterpiece yet, the movie is a playful take on patriarchy where two young brides, who get separated from their respective husbands, take on this laugh-out-loud comedy escapades and mistaken identities.

The film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan in prominent roles, with each actor delivering phenomenal performances.

The film saw a theatrical release in March but did not see a massive turnout at the box office. However, it received all the love after its OTT release on Netflix. Laapata Ladies also beat the total viewership of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal on the streaming platform.

Now that the movie is gearing up for its release in Japan on October 4, Kiran Rao expresses her enthusiasm as she shares her love for Japanese cinema and culture.

'As an admirer of Japanese cinema, this feels like a full-circle moment. I've always had a deep interest in Japanese culture, and I hope the film's emotional core will resonate with Japanese audiences just as it did with ours,' she said.

The filmmaker further added, 'This release is a significant milestone for the film and showcases how cinema can bridge cultures through shared stories and emotions.'

When asked about her film's chance of being shortlisted as India's official entry for the Oscars, Kiran said, 'My dream would be fulfilled if it was, if it would go to the Oscars.. But it's a process, and I'm hoping it'll (Laapataa Ladies) be considered. I'm sure the best film will go to whoever they choose in the scheme of things."
