This year will see some fabulous and exciting content lined up where story will be the hero. One of them is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi. A unique way of narrating how courtesans were once queens, the teaser of the web series has already intrigued fans.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently opened up about his much awaited project, 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.' In the press conference, the filmmaker shared that though he has worked on grand projects, Heeramandi is bigger than all of them.
He even went on to claim it as his biggest project and said, 'I've made big films. I enjoy making those big-scale films, and it comes naturally to me. But while shifting to digital, I've taken it up a notch. 'Heeramandi' is my biggest project I wanted to make it really special, and I have surprised myself with this one.'
Sanjay Leela Bhansali Builds Excitement for 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar'
Heeramandi is a period drama set in the diamond districts of present-day Lahore. The plot will revolve around the courtesans of Heeramandi and their struggle for power, set against the socio-political backdrop of pre-independence India.The upcoming Netflix series promises a mix of love stories, betrayal, succession and politics in the house of the courtesans, commonly known as kothas.

Speaking about his most ambitious project, Bhansali said, 'This is an epic, first-of-its-kind series based on the courtesans of Lahore. It is an ambitious, grand and all-encompassing series therefore I am nervous yet excited about making it. I am looking forward to my partnership with Netflix and bringing 'Heeramandi' to audiences all over the world.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali talks about moving from films to series
Talking about his debut as an OTT web series, the director expressed that it was a big challenge. He promised that every episode would be a cinematic masterpiece.In an interview, Bhansali shared that 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar' is a tribute to some of Bollywood's most iconic films like 'Mughal-E-Azam' and 'Pakeezah'.
Adding to the excitement of the upcoming series, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, "This is not just a show, it's a world, and I am eager for audiences around the world to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of 'Heeramandi' on Netflix."
'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar' marks Bhansali's debut on Netflix. It is one of the most anticipated series of 2024 in India, starring talented and graceful actresses like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal.
The release date for the series is yet to be announced, but today's 'Next on Netflix' event on February 29, 2024, is sure to bring some announcement about the upcoming project.
