R Madhavan on Dhurandhar 2 and its ban in the UAE
Dhurandhar: The Revenge has had the internet in a frenzy, as moviegoers are waiting in anticipation about what Aditya Dhar has to offer in the sequel. With the first part shattering several box office records, expectations from Dhurandhar 2 are sky-high.
For decades, audiences have watched the same India-Pakistan narrative on screen. While some say it is political propaganda, others are rather intrigued by the tragic history.
The familiar template has now bored the audience.
But there`s something with Aditya Dhar`s spy espionage drama that has struck a chord with the audience – so much so that the theories about the second part have already started to surface on social media and discussion-orientated platforms.
R. Madhavan on the India-Pak on-screen narrative
R. Madhavan, who plays a pivotal role in Dhurandhar, shared a similar sentiment in a recent interview with Sonai Shenoy on her YouTube channel.
“Traditionally, we’ve been making movies around the India–Pakistan war or our freedom struggle. That has been our action space and our core go-to in terms of storytelling," the actor shared.
He further opined, "But the younger generation doesn’t even want that anymore. They’re like, `Samajh gaya main, kitni baar bologe?` (I’ve understood it; how many times will you say it?) And I think after Dhurandhar, that whole India–Pakistan thing is going to go. That’s the full stop now.”

Ranveer Singh`s spy drama was banned in the Middle East, citing anti-Pakistan sentiment. Despite the same, Dhurandhar went on to do extraordinary business at the domestic as well as global box office.

In the same interview, Madhavan spoke about the craze surrounding the film in the UAE and said, “If you look at Dhurandhar, people from Dubai actually flew down for one day to watch the film and then flew back. That is the power of good content.”
“Now they’re planning their business meetings around March 19 when Dhurandhar 2 is releasing; they’ll go there for meetings, watch the film, and then return, as it’s banned in the UAE. For them, it would be so easy to just watch it on IPTV, okay? And I’m sure they could. But they want to experience watching a film like Dhurandhar in a theatre full of people," he shared.
The Rang De Basanti star further continued, "That gives you a community experience. Cinema allows that. Watching the same film alone at home feels completely different. It’s like performing dandiya in front of the TV. Dandiya is something you go out and play on the ground with people around you.”
Despite the ban in the Gulf and Pakistan, Dhurandhar earned over 1300 crore worldwide, with about 890 crore net in India. Dhurandhar 2 is all set to release in cinemas on March 19.
