Veteren Playback Singer Uma Ramanan Passes Away at 72 in Chennai
Veteran playback singer and TV host Uma Ramanan has sadly passed away on May 1. The legendary singer passed away in Chennai at the age of 72, after battling some illness. Uma Ramanan is survived by her husband AV Ramanan and their son, Vignesh Ramanan. The cause for the playback singer’s death is unknown as of now, and further details about the funeral are awaited.

Uma Ramanan was a trained classical singer and did playback singing primarily for Tamil language songs. She made her debut in 1977 with the song ‘Mohanan Kannan Murali’ composed by SV Venkatraman for the film Sri Krishna Leela. During her successful career spanning over three decades, the singer performed at more than 6,000 concerts.
Some of her most notable work was recorded with the veteran music composer Illaiyaraja. Uma Ramanan first got noticed for the song `Poongathave Thaal Thiravai` from the Tamil film, `Nizhalgal`. Her association with Illaiyaraja catapulted her to fame, and the duo worked on more than a hundred songs together. Some of the most popular Uma Ramanan and Illaiyaraja collaborations include “Aagava Vennilave” from Arangetra Velai, “Oru Jeevan Alaithathu” from Geetanjali, “Poongathave Thal Thiravai” from Nilalgal, “Poopalam Isaikum” from Thambikku Entha Ooru, and “Nee Padhi Naan Padhi Kanne” from Keladi Kanmani.

Uma Ramanan has also collaborated with some of the industry’s most talented artists like MSV, Shankar-Ganesh, T Rajender, Deva, SA Rajkumar, Chili, Mani Sharma, Srikanth Deva, and Vidyasagar. Uma Ramanan’s last song was `Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu` for Thirupaachi. This film was released back in 2005 and starred Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan. Her last song was composed by Mani Sharma, and Uma gave her vocals for it alongside Harish Raghavendra and Premji Amaren.
