Speak of Indian classical music and Pandit Ravi Shankars name would be fondly remembered. Born as Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury at Varanasi in 1920, he began his career as a dancer in his brothers troupe that toured Europe in the 1930s. He trained under Indian classical musician Allauddin Khan and later came to the attention of Yehudi Menuhin, with whom he became a lifelong collaborator. He won three Grammy awards, including one for his contribution to George Harrisons 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. He was a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Indias highest civilian award. On his 96th birth anniversary, we bring you pictures of the maestro that you would not see in your school General Knowledge books.
